A Moorish Sunset

One of my friends posted this article on my wall today about getting your images published in magazines.  I found it pretty informative and would recommend a read if this even remotely interests you.  Here is the link to the article.

Yesterday I posted a bunch of tips about shooting sunrises and sunsets, but didn’t have any of my photos on me to add as examples.  I just added some so check it out if you haven’t yet had a chance!

Last year I had the opportunity to visit the awe-inspiring Moorish Castle in Sintra, Portugal.  Just as a side note, I would rather visit the Lisbon area for a few days than most  other “touristy” places throughout Europe (Paris, Rome, Venice, London, Berlin, etc).  There is so much history, so many castles and medieval towns, fantastic food, and the nicest people in the world reside in this region.  I rented a car and toured around by myself for 3 days and ended up seeing 12 castles, 10 cities, a grotto, numerous palaces, countless beautiful churches, and a ton more.  Anyways, get out to Portugal as soon as you can!  I can’t wait to go back!

OK, back to the story.  So I had been driving for a while and finally reached the town of Sintra in the mid-evening, about 2 hrs before sunset.  I checked in to my hotel, threw my bags in the room, dropped my camera and broke the hood and battery holder clip thingie, then raced up the little one-way road to the castle.  Being up in the mountains, Sintra was a bit cooler than the rest of the towns I visited, which I neglected to consider when rushing out of the hotel room.  Finally at the castle, I had about 20 minutes before the sunset.  This beautiful seems like it is on top of the world (the castle is literally on the tallest peak in the entire Lisbon Valley, providing amazing views 270 degrees around).  I took tons of shots, some of which are hanging on my wall at home (I guess they are all still on the floor as I am still in the process of moving in).  After sticking around and finishing up shooting, I wandered to the front gate and it was padlocked!  I was starting to freak out a bit since the temp had dropped to about 50 degrees and continued to fall – me in my basketball shorts, sandals and a t-shirt.  After 30 minutes of yelling, jumping in front of the security cameras, and scribbling my last will and testament in blood on the 1500 year old castle walls, the groundskeeper unlocked the gate and let me out.  He said he was locking up the security office to head home for the evening and caught my big goofy body jumping around on the security camera.  Needless to say I was extremely relieved!  These are the only two shots I can find right now in my archives (they are a mess and need a little TLC one day), one of which I used in yesterday’s sunrise/sunset post.  You can see the itty bitty moon in the first image.  These are both before my days of HDR.  I hope you enjoy!

Thanks so much for reading!!  Check back soon!
